History of Cloelia

Cloelia launched as the “WCC Newsletter” in 1976 only four years after the founding of the WCC in 1972 . Originally published annually and mailed to members, Cloelia highlighted cutting-edge scholarship related to gender and gender studies and was a forum for discussing professional matters related to supporting women in the field of Classics. Cloelia also served as a way outside of the annual meetings to distribute updates to members on WCC initiatives and activities. As feminist scholarship became more mainstream and electronic publishing provided more avenues for frequent contact, Cloelia was distributed as a PDF by email and in print at the Annual Conference (SCS, formerly APA). For the early history of Cloelia, read “The WCC Newsletter: Lessons in Sisterhood” (p. 6-21) by former co-chair (2019-20) Lisl Walsh.

In 2016, editor Fiona McHardy moved Cloelia to the electronic platform Medium, where it was maintained for four years. Due to the challenges of the pandemic and changes in leadership, Cloelia went temporarily dormant. With the launch of its new website, WCC began exploring new ways to revive Cloelia, including issuing newsletters directly on the website. Click here to read the 2021 WCC Newsletters. In July 2022, WCC listserv Manager Melissa Funke took on the challenge of reviving and rebuilding Cloelia.
